The structure of
Scheggino is the
one of a castle on the slant, it has a triangular form with the keep on the
high summit and the long side formed by the bank of the
river Nera.
Its historical function was to place itself as a block to keep watch of one of
the bridges over the river, for a merely defensive purpose which was to protect
the
dukedom of Spoleto.
The proper inhabited centre developed in the course of the 14
th and
15
th century, when a community devoted to agriculture sprang up
around the castle.
The first circle of walls marks the boundary of the most ancient part of
Scheggino, called ''
Capo la Terra'', whereas the more recent areas are
those sloping down towards the valley and being built around the 16
th century with the birth of the village.
Scheggino is immersed in the natural environment of the
Valnerina and
reflects totally its best characteristics, adding to the typical landscape some
completely particular and personal aspects. Not far from the town centre gush
out plentifully the sources
Fonti di Valcasana, a real natural spectacle
which offers an incomparably beautiful view.
