Valfabbrica and outskirts
In the middle of the historical centre
there's the Torrione, imposing structure defensive of the city, from
which departs a boundaries line dated 1200. Perhaps it's the ancient door of
the city. Nearby a second tower rises, reconstructed in last century, today
became a bell tower.
The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is what remains of the ancient Benedictine abbey and
dates back to 820 AC. Thanks to the
presence of the monks in the territory an area of swampland was reclaimed next
to the banks of the river Chiascio,
from which grew the city of Valfabbrica.
The history of these places since then become interwoven without halting the
activity and the presence of the abbey. Today to visit a chapel will display
the restored interior which has preserved an important fresco of the '300s, the
only example in Umrian territory of the school
of Cimabue.
Casacastalda is a medieval suburb risen in the neighbourhood a castle built around 763 A.C.
by the longobard Ernero Castaldo. The village is marvellously preserved
and maintains intact its structure, made of tangled lstreets, and ancient
buildings. In the church of Santa Maria Assunta its' possible to admire
a precious triptyc of Matteo da Gualdo.
