Corso Tacito and outskirts
Corso Tacito is the image of the new Terni, a city that has seen to engrave to its
development an abrupt acceleration beginning from the last decades of the eight
hundred. With the realisation of this important street of communication, the
city symbolically assumes also the aspect of a new place, voted to the progress
and the industry. It was realised beginning from 1870, to allow a rapid
connection between the city centre and the railway station, creating so a more
dynamic and efficient urban structure. The ancient suburb went out of its
cocoon, and turned into modern commercial enterprises, banks, typographies and
bookstores. Many buildings were amputated for making space for the new artery,
others buildings rose, inspired by the demands of the modern industries, that
would have radically transformed the face of Terni in few years later.
Just in the middle of the Corso there's Piazza
Tacito, which in its middle the Fountain dominates, whose shape remembers
an absorbed pen in its inkpot. It's composed by a circular tub with the floor
decorated to mosaic, on which flows water coming from an external ring and that
goes to join with another yeld of water that is falling from a superior tub. In
the middle raise another pinnacle. This fountain was realised in 1932, but
damaged by the bombardments so it was reconstructed in 1961. The masterpiece is
devoted to the city of Terni and its industrial vocation.
In Piazza Dante there's a monument of industrial archaeology, a colossus of 12.000
tons: the Grande Pressa, concrete and powerful image of the age of the
steel of Terni. Commissioned in 1934 to the English Company Davy Brothers it was set during the epoch as the proud of the Acciaierie Ternane, able to
make a mighty step forward both to the war production and the civil one. The
square in which is exposed is part of a place that is integral part of the
circuit dedicated to exalt the archaeological-industrial prominence of Terni,
through a modern Centre of Documentation on the Grande Pressa.
