The Museums of Spoleto
One of the privileged places of the city
which shows the strong artistic sense of Spoleto is the Civic Gallery
of Modern art, in the grandiose Palazzo Collicola. The experience of
the Civic Gallery is born in the first years of 1950, when in Spoleto a
small group of artists puts in evidence and reaches a fame that crosses the
regional confinements. De Gregorio, Marignoli, Orsini, Raspi and Toscano,
under the sculptor Leoncillo Leoncilli, they organise an exhibition
space devoted to the Spoleto Prize with the intention of creating a
gallery of contemporary art. Up to 1968 the editions of the contest are
regularly developed, hosting the most greater artists and critical. Today the
exhibition of Palazzo Collicola can boast an enviable review of the development
of the Italian Informal art.
You can't miss the Picture-Gallery,
located in the City-hall, inside which, besides paintings and furnish of
centuries XII-XVIII, are collected works of Spagna, Guercino, Niccolò
Alunno, Spranger and De Vecchi.
There is then the structure of museums of
the Earth Sciences Didactic Laboratory, inside which is possible to
visit a rich geo-palaeontology collection composed of over 5000 finds.
Opened to the public there is also the
"Roman House", an ancient ladylike apartment, belonged to rich
exponents of the Roman society, perhaps even to Vespasia Polla, mother
of the emperor Vespasiano.
