Last minute The ''defence'' of the Castle of Scheggino

Scheggino in ancient times became the protagonist of a to put it mildly unique incident. In a text, the ''Riformanze'' of the dukedom of Spoleto from 1552, is described an incident with the inhabitants of Scheggino and particularly the women as protagonists. In this year happened a revolt of all the castles of the Valnerina which were joined in an alliance against the dukedom of Spoleto, that had appointed a call-up in order to get together about 1000 infantrymen. The revolt was guided by Petrone da Vallo and Picozzo Brancaleoni. The town Scheggino didn't join the quarrelsome, remaining faithful to the obligation which bound it to Spoleto, and so it attracted the wrath of the communes of the alliance.  In 1552 the alliance, taking advantage of the absence of the men who were in the fields for the usual mowing, tried to assault the city walls.

The assault failed because the women and children managed to face up to the army and defence their houses and their town.
