The
church of San Salvatore at
Usigni was built on the initiative of cardinal
Fausto Poli (1581-1652), who
arrived at the highest authorities of the Roman Papal Court without ever
neglecting the place where he was born. He lived as private secretary of
pope
Urban VIII in the first half of the 17
th century and was a very
successful personality. Being a great connoisseur of arts and knowing the best
artist of his time he spent much energy to take his native village and the
surrounding territory out of its isolation.
As well as promoting the construction of the church he embellished it properly
and filled it with very valuable artistic objects, like antependiums, shrines
and precious sacred vestments.
He had also the undiscussed merit to not have spared any efforts for the
diffusion of the worship of
Santa Rita da Cascia, of which he can
rightly be considered the initiator.
