It is placed just out the boundaries of Perugia,
in the immediate proximity of the fraction of Ponte San Giovanni, and it
constitutes one of the best examples of present Etruscan grave in the
territory.
It's a Etruscan hypogeum grave, built in
the II century B.C. for the family of Arunte Volumnio. The sepulchre is
found inside the vast Necropoli del Palazzone that goes back to the VI-V
century B.C., a site that contains to its inside a big number of underground
sepulchres and a museum that collects its urns and recovered finds.
The grave was discovered in 1840, during
some improving work to the connections between the city of Perugia and its
outskirts.
The structure of the grave repeats the
division of the spaces typical of the plant of a Roman house, it is separated
in ten environments which is accessed through a steps corridor. Inside every
environment numerous urns and objects were guarded that constituted the dowry
outfit of the dead one.
The main room is found in the Tablinum (the study in the Roman houses), a complex of seven graves among which it
distinguishes the main one, that of Arunte Volumnio, the head of the family,
represented in position abandoned on a draped bed. To the sides they are found
prepared other graves, belonging to the remainders members of the family, among
which the Arunte Volumnio's daughter.
The whole Necropolis of Palazzone counts around
two hundred graves, most of them of Hellenistic age, but some belong even to
the ancient period constituting a complex of enormous interest for the study of
the remote history of Perugia.
