July: The Palio of the Boats
The Recalling of a Race with the “Boats on the Backs” Between Land and Lake
Extremely spectacular race, which is quite
demanding for about 160 rivals who are divided in the four quarters of the
town. It is a unique contest which takes place on the last Sunday of the month
and goes on in three phases: the first and the third in the water, while the
second part of the Palio is run with the boats “on the backs” on the land
along the narrow streets of the old town centre. The Palio recalls a historical
episode of the 22nd March 1495, which is the battle of the Baglioni against the Oddi, who had come out alive from the expulsion of Perugia hurrying on a boat and taking shelter on the castle of Passignano.
