The museums of Orvieto
Orvieto Underground
The charm of Orvieto is spectacularly reflected in its
subsoil, and for a city that shines into the light of the sun, there is another
that lives in the darkness among burrows, with hidden rooms and paths dug into
the rock. During 2500 years an endless network of underground galleries have
created a shelter and a sure place in which to live and to flourish, also
certainly that have remained practically unexplored up until recent times.
Today it is finally possible to take a trip to discover the ancient Velzna and its inhabitants,
penetrating, in a simple and sure way, into the deepest Orvieto, where the time
loses sense, in a trip back to a natural and mysterious rich past.
Museum Claudio Faina
The Palazzo Faina hosts the Claudio
Faina Archaeological Museum of Orvieto, a collection of first
greatness in the national and international panorama, articulated in 19 rooms
where are exposed the numerous pieces collected in the years by Mauro and Eugenio Faina. There are lots of finds, among which detach for importance
the three amphorae with black figures of the room VIII, work of the attic craft
artist Exekias. Other amphorae both black and red figures are exposed in
the rooms VI - VIII, while at the opening of the run there's a rich series of
over three thousand coins. The visit continues with the rooms devoted to the
bronzes and to the typical Etruscan ceramic, the "bucchero".
It's a typical ceramics used beginning from the VII century up to the V century
B.C., obtained with a particular mix of chromatic uniforms and very shiny
tonalities.
Museum Emilio Greco
In the rooms of the Palazzo Soliano has been prepared an exhibition inside which it is possible to admire a series
of 32 sculptures in bronze and about sixty graphic works of the artist Emilio
Greco, given as gift to the city of Orvieto after having carved the three
bronze portals of the Duomo in the first years of 1960.
