The Papal Buildings
Orvieto has a complex of three residences,
which during the XIII century have entertained the pontiffs Urbano IV,
Gregorio X and Martino IV.
Palazzo del Vescovado
It was made to build in 977 from Pope
Benedetto VII and it was lived by popes and bishops, each of which added
ornaments and changes. Consistent part of the building entertains the National
Archaeological Museum.
Palazzo Soliano
Known as Palazzo of Bonifacio VIII,
even if it is not known with precision if has been him who wanted its
construction, or if it was built in his honour thanking the received pleasures.
It goes back to the end of the XIII century, and possesses a magnificent series
of mullioned windows and a wide stairway that allows the access to a vast room
destined to the reception of ambassadors and high personalities.
Palazzo Papale
This is the less noble of the three,
endowed with smaller charm. It has suffered a restoration in the sixties.
