The Buildings of Narni
The political nucleus of the city of Narni
is represented by the Palazzo dei Priori, vital centre of the political
activity. It's a splendid medieval monument, built in 1275 by the Gattapone,
occupying an already dear space to the Romans, the ancient Platea Maior, centre
of the Forum. Elegant and stately, the ample Picture Gallery Priori is an
arcade constituted by cross-vaults held up by a central pillar. To the right of
the picture gallery a bell tower raises, beside which there's the Arengo del
Banditore.
The City hall (or Palazzo del Podestā) shows what results from the fusion of three
pre-existing buildings, belonging in communal epoch to three ancient families
from Narni: Sinibaldi, Oddone and Omodei. Its creation goes back to the
XIII century, although there were light transformations made during the 14th Century. Furthermore, inside the Town hall it is possible to admire a Roman
grave, various monuments and a fifteenth-century.
Other place to be visited is Palazzo
Eroli, which, restructured in the XVIII century, today is centre of the
Library, the Archive and of the Picture-Gallery. This last one collects various
pieces of great merit, among which deserve to put in evidence: a table of the Ghirlandaio,
the "the Madonna's Crowning", dated 1486, one "Annunciation"
of Benozzo Gozzoli, a work of the Spagna, "Stimmate of
St. Francis", and a Standard in wood realised by the Maestro
di Narni (1409), above which are painted two representations of the Virgin,
the "Madonna in Throne" and the "Dormitio Virginis."
