The town Massa Martana
The Church of Santa Maria in Pantano was built in the VII-VIII century and is probably one of the most
ancient of whole Umbria. According to the tradition it would be dated even to
the V century. The façade is very more recent and is slightly leaning.
Devoted to San Faustino is the Abbazia
of San Faustino built on the ruins of a Roman villa. It has recently suffered notable restoration
works.
Even the construction of the Abbazia of
San Fidenzio and San Terenzio is very ancient, and it perhaps goes up to
the XI century made by the Noble of Massa, but there are reasons to
believe that it was initiated even in the X century. The saints to which the
church is devoted came from Syria to spread the Christian religion, when
they were captured by the emperor Diocleziano and places under
martyrdom. Just on their rests rose the church.
Built on the sepulchre of the martyr of Ravenna,
the Church of Santa Illuminata is dated XI century. The Saint became
Christian and to escape the persecutions found shelter in Massa Martana.
Unfortunately she didn't succeed to escape the martyrdom.
The Abbazia of Santa Maria di Viepri was erected around in 1150 by the gentlemen of Castelvecchio. It still
maintains a Romanesque structure, despite numerous remaking, while Santa
Maria della Pace is an octagonal shape church of the XVI-XVII century.
