Last minute The Quintana of Foligno

The tournament of the Quintana of Foligno is the historical remembering of a series of celebrations that precisely took place February 10^th 1613 on the occasion of the carnival. Of such celebrations precise news are given thanks to the faithful transcription of the events from a treasurer of the epoch. In 1946 at Foligno such indications were taken back and the tournament was prepared again in its ancient shine. Since then it has acquired prestige and importance, as constituting reference event for the local population, and also as an attraction able to recall spectators from all over Italy. The definitive national recognition has come when, for well three years, the fates of the knights have been tied up to the extraction of the National Lottery.

The tournament foresees the challenge among ten knights, each of which represents a city neighbourhood. To the centre of a run shaped like an eight, is set the Quintana, it's a wooden statue of the XVII century, to which, in the inferior part of the tense right arm toward the outside, are applied three rings. The pretenders have to cover the whole run on fast horses arriving to insert one after the other all the rings, without incurring in none of the penalties. Than passes the following turns, during which the diameter of the rings progressively decreases, passing from 10 to 8 centimetres, up to the last series constituted by rings of the diameter of 6 centimetres. The knight that succeeds in inserting the three rings in the smaller possible time wins the challenge. The neighbourhood that wins receive the precious Palio, painted every year from different artists of international fame.

Every year there are held two tournaments in the '' Campo de li Giochi '', the first one in June is the '' Sfida '' (challenge), and the second dictates of the '' Rivincita '' (revenge) is in September.

During the days reserved to the show of the tournament of the Quintana the city of Foligno becomes animated of medieval life, thanks to the historical processions in custom and to the opening of the taverns in the streets of the city centre.
