He was born in 1430 in Foligno, its
more illustrious child, Niccolò di Liberatore, famous painter and
magnificent interpreter of the Renaissance. It owes his nickname to one
"mistake" of Giorgio Vasari, which interpreted the signature
of a work that brought the wording '' alumnus Fulginie '' (that is '' trained
in Foligno ''), as part of his name. Since then Niccolò was known as the Pupil.
Initially its artistic expression received the influence of the angelic one and Benozzo Gozzoli, but quite soon he clearly overcomes their art in virtue
of the sincerity of an intense mystical feeling, strongly permeated by an
emotional plant. The Pupil is the representative of this school that more than
every other has known how to interpret the typical pathos of the pictorial
Umbrian art, translating it in a dramatic plasticity and dynamism. Its
characters apparently put aside the physical beauty, but they conduct the
spectator in a more intense spiral of emotion. This is evident in his many
paintings in the Umbrian churches and in the museums, which show lengthened
figures, a certain fineness of the sketch, shining colours and a dry plastic
prominence. Among the most mature works a place of absolute relief and excellence
deserves the '' Polyptich of Nativity '', visible in the Church of
San Nicolò of Foligno, inside which is found also a '' Nativity '', other expression of
the Pupil.
