The town Citerna
The Church of San Michele Arcangelo was built between 1680 and 1682 by the Brotherhood of the St. Sacrament,
entertains to its inside a Crucifixion on table of Niccolò Circignani,
the Pomarancio, author also of the wooden altar. In the square
opposite the church there's a cistern, in ancient times used for the
storage of rain waters, typical and very diffused element in the zone.
According to some studious, thanks to this feature it would be attributable the
origin of the topographical name, contrary others believe that the origin is
more remote and directly connected to the Etruscan period.
In the heart of the town, rises the Teatro Bontempelli strongly
wanted by the family Vitelli in the XVI century, recently restored and
brought to its ancient shine, today entertains frequent representations.
Piazza Scipioni is the ideal nucleus of the city. It's a marvellous living room with
sight. The landscape that can be enjoyed leaning out from this natural terrace
doesn't has comparison with some of the most famous panoramas in Italy.
The St. Francis Church was built in
1500 above a pre-existing building and devoted to St. Francis in honour of his
visit in this place. In the cloister and in the attached convent are currently
situated the town offices and the Historical Library. The inside of the
church is richly frescoed by authors of the Signorelli school and
various tables of Raffaellino del Colle, student of Raffaello Sanzio.
There is also one "Deposition" , a work of the Pomarancio.
