The town Bettona
The Common Picture-Gallery is situated inside the Palazzetto of the Podestā, building of the XIV
century and ancient residence of the Podestā and the Governatori.
It contains the precious archaeological finds, cultural testimonies of the past
of the whole territory and pictorial works of notable artistic value. Besides
the "Madonna of Mercy" of Pietro Vannucci, the Perugino,
works of Fiorenzo di Lorenzo are exposed, of the Robbia, Dono
Doni and Jacopo Siculo.
The building in which the oratory of S.
Andrea resides goes up again to the XII century, but it has been more times
damaged and modernized, preserve in its inside a suggestive pictorial cycle of Giotto's school of 1394, in which are represented scenes drawn by the Passion of
Christ.
The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore is located in the historical centre. It's the mother church of the whole area
of Bettona. It was widened and re-sacred in 1225. The apse is enriched
from a fresco of 1939, work of the futurist painter Gerardo Dottori.
