Last Minute St. Francis of Assisi: the inventor of the Crib

The spiritual distance that separated Francis of Assisi from the ecclesiastical hierarchies of the time, brought him to draw closer always to the people, more precisely to the common people. Just the separation between the mass of the believers and the liturgical celebrations, often incomprehensible to the most, it induced St. Francis to experiment a new way of communication, to share as much as possible the beauty of the Christian message. In 1223 the celebrated mass the Christmas Night was prepared at Greccio with the choreography of a plastic representing the nativity. The purpose of such scene was to come out of the Latin crystallized forms and current religious liturgies to draw closer to the devotional forms of the popular faith. It was so that in the Christmas night of 1223 in Greccio, St. Francis realized the first Crib of the history of the Christianity. This event, apparently of smaller importance, has perhaps marked the history of the popular Christian tradition more than every other one.
