Umbria Jazz 2004

Umbria Jazz 04, 9-18 July 2004. This festival for specialists now shares its theatres, clubs and larger venues with more popular forms of music.

At Umbria Jazz 2004 there will be great jazz and also – more than ever before – blues and soul. There will be icons of pop and black music, together with fresh talents who are new to the hit parade. And there are bigger and more comfortable venues, to cater for larger audiences. However, the festival remains tenaciously attached to its roots in the historic centre of Perugia, and to the theatres, clubs and town squares which give Umbria Jazz its distinctive character.
Umbria Jazz starts its second thirty years by re-proposing the festival format that was used last year for its thirtieth birthday celebrations. This choice of format modifies and re-writes the traditional image of a festival which, although it has always been receptive to the many different forms of music in our time, has remained faithful to its identity as a jazz festival. Obviously, jazz still remains the heart and soul of Umbria's biggest event, but new windows are opening onto types of music that go beyond the orthodoxy of what is usually defined as Afro-American music.
The ''extraordinary'' nature of last year’s festival, to celebrate thirty years of Umbria Jazz’s history, has become the “ordinary” present and future of the festival, a festival which has shown that it still has room for growth. And besides, the great success of Umbria Jazz 2003 (in terms of media coverage, artistic quality, audiences and takings) would not have not allowed the festival to volontarily go back to a reduced programme of music for niche audiences in smaller venues such as the Frontone Gardens (which were used as a venue in previous years). For Umbria Jazz, a new phase has begun.
If this has been, possible, it is thanks to the support and strong motivation of the public bodies involved. Umbria Region, Perugia City Council and Perugia Province have reaffirmed the festival’s strategic importance in promoting the image of Umbria and have reconfirmed again for this year the financial contributions that they made in 2003. Last January, Umbria Jazz clearly demonstrated the role it can play in promoting Umbria abroad when it went to America and used its prestigious name to sponsor Italian Jazz in New York (at the Blue Note, the most important jazz club in the world), and also to sponsor Umbria, its fine handcrafts, and its image as a tourist destination of quality, above all in the period coinciding with the Perugino exhibitions, which close on 18 July, the same day
