May: The Pugnaloni
This event is a celebration of St
Isidore and of the rustic and rural world and is connected to ancient
propitiatory and fertility rites. The celebration has its roots far back in
time and today it appears as a parade of carts and the playing of allegoric
scenes of the agricultural life. The ''pugnaloni'' were long
wooden poles with gifts and offerings in a container fixed at their ends. At
the end of the celebration, a jury assembled on purpose chooses the winner
group that has decorated most beautifully its cart and its “pugnalone”.
